Creativity
I have always had an itch to build things and create art. As a child I used to write stories about my favourite cartoon characters, and build castles and army bases out of sticks in the back yard for my little plastic army men. Today I still have this passion to create but most of this creative energy is currently directed towards software development.
Work
I am a web services developer for the Facultly of Applied Sciences at Simon Fraser University. There we use Plone for most of our web content management, but I have been developing a new framework, called Dataface, to help build robust relational data-driven web applications. It is my vision that Dataface will revolutionize the way that web applications are built by factoring out all of the tedious database administration tasks and leaving the application developers to focus on application-specific issues. I will likely be putting a significant amount of effort into the development of Dataface over the next year (2006). It is open-source, so the world will be able to benefit from this development. After Dataface is "done", perhaps I’ll be looking for creative endeavors in other fields.
Relationships
Sometimes I feel like "the luckiest guy in the world" (please forgive the over-used tag line) when I look at my beautiful girlfriend, Beverly. We met in Chinese 100 (Introduction to Mandarin Chinese) class a couple of years ago and then became friends in the SFU Film Club (formerly AsOne Studio) where we worked together on a short film, called Campus Man. I wrote it, she directed it, and together we edited it using Final Cut Pro. By the end of editing, we knew that we had something more than a common passion for making movies. We had a passion for each other.
